Action call over natural disasters
Submitted by BigGreenSwitch on Mon, 30/06/2008 - 08:00. Talking PointsAction must be taken to prepare for the increasing number of natural disasters expected to hit the world as a result of climate change, Save the Children said in a new report.
The international aid agency called for a dramatic shake-up in dealing with devastating events such as cyclones, tsunamis and earthquakes.
According to In the Face of Disaster, governments, international organisations and aid agencies must change their tactics and prepare for natural disasters rather than just respond to them.
They must invest money to prepare in advance for the increase in the number and severity of disasters that climate change will bring, Save the Children said.
The agency suggested that if all the countries that give money to humanitarian assistance invested an additional 10% of the £5 billion they spent on responding to disasters on preparation, they could prevent £3.5 billion of losses - enough to respond to five tsunamis.
