Switch appliances with power packs or adapters off at the plug

Switch appliances with power packs or adapters off at the plug.

An appliance with a power adapter/pack will still be using up energy if it's not switched off at the wall or unplugged.

Many items of modern technology utilise power adapters or power packs to boost the supply of electricity. They are most commonly used on computer equipment, but you may also see them on DVD players, modems and TVs.

The downside of power packs/adapters is that, even if the piece of equipment is completely switched off, unless you’ve stopped the electricity at the socket you’ll still be using energy. You can tell when this is happening because the adapter will stay warm or may have an LED light on.

Although the energy that these individual devices use is quite small, a home with 10 of these types of power packs/adapters constantly plugged in around the clock could easily be using up to 360 KWh of energy in a year, enough to keep an energy efficient light bulb burning constantly for just over two years.

The only way to completely stop energy wastage is to turn the appliance off at the socket or unplug it. Try to get into the habit of turning off your plugs to save electricity and money.

Typically, as much as 95% of a mobile phones charger’s total energy use is wasted by leaving it plugged in but either not connected to a phone or attached to a phone that is fully charged.
