Add a water butt to your garden
Leave your tap alone and use the water you've collected for watering the garden or washing the car.
Installing a water butt to your guttering down pipe, instead of simply letting rainwater from your roof wash straight down the drain, can considerably reduce the volume of tap water needed for outdoor jobs, such as watering the garden or washing the car.
Water butts can be bought at a relatively low cost and are easy to install. You may even be able to get one for free, or at a reduced price, from your local water company or council.
As well as reducing your overall household water consumption, and thereby saving the energy needed to treat the used water, you could also make a decent saving on your water bill if your supply is metered.

In the UK the proportion of treated mains drinking water used for gardening can approach 50% during the driest months. .
