Work from home more regularly
Technology means that you can now often work as efficiently at home as you can at work.
One option for a green, clean way of commuting is simply not to go into work at all! But while your boss may take some considerable convincing that you taking regular "duvet days" is all in the name of the environment, he/she may well be more open to the idea of you working from home on a more regular basis.
The increased speed of home internet connections together with advances in other communication tools has opened up many more opportunities for working from home than were previously possible.
Logically, you stand to financially save 20% per week off your commuting costs such as fuel and wear and tear on your car by working one day a week from home. Your company may also benefit financially from allowing its staff to work more regularly from home as it could see a drop in its energy costs as a result.
And, as long as you're not then leaving all the lights on at home and heating the entire house for the one room you're working in, your energy usage at home should not be considerably larger than if you were working from the office.
A day working from home could also have a dramatic psychological effect on breaking up your working week and, with the urge to break off to watch Neighbours and Cash in the Attic overcome, working from home can often prove more distraction-free and therefore more productive than an average day in the office.
