Tips for staying warm at night Without putting the heating on
Submitted by starchild on Tue, 19/02/2008 - 15:33.Today's tip is to turn off the heating at night.
This is a great tip as it will save a lot of money and carbon emissions.
You won't get a good night's sleep if you are not warm though, so here are eight ideas to keep you comfortable and warm while using less resources:
i) Treat yourself to a pair of cosy, organic pyjamas. Just wearing one layer of clothes in bed can help keep you warm and keep chills off your neck and shoulders.
ii) Wear a pair of socks! Cold feet mean a cold body.
iii) Do a bit of light exercise before bed such as sit ups or a few touch-your-toes so that you get into bed a bit warmer.
iv) while you are doing your light exercise, have a hot water bottle or wheat bag in the bed warming up your space.
v) Layers are important. If you really suffer with the cold, then consider sleeping ON a duvet as well as under one.
vi) Enjoy a warm drink before bed such as milk. Try a pinch of cayenne in it for real inner warmth!
vii) Select your duvet wisely. When you sleep, around a litre of water evaporates from your body. If you are under a synthetic duvet you wake up hot and clammy in the night. A natural duvet allows the moisture to evaporate, keeping you comfortable and warm.
viii) Goose feather and down is the warmest natural duvet fibre there is. The higher the down content, the warmer the duvet. Considering you spend around a third of your life in bed, it's worth investing in a good quality, natural and comfortable duvet.
Sweet dreams!
good point!
:D :D maybe exercise before bed is a little far fetched.
I have a rebounder and a glider in the room next to my bedroom and I'll sometimes go on them for 5 minutes while my husband stacks up the fire for the night and does the washing up.
Sometimes I'll brush the floor while he is pottering about, so that warms me up a bit too :)
But if you're tired each night, then hopefully you'll just fall asleep without needing to worry about the cold!

Great ideas!
Thanks for these Starchild - some great points!
The idea of sleeping on TOP of a duvet as well as under one is a great idea though! I know we've got a spare duvet under our spare bed so might give that a go!
And you're right about socks! They can make such a difference.
I must admit though that most nights, come bedtime, I'm ready to just flake into my bed so can't see me doing sit-ups or anything of that ilk before lights-out!
