Nice and slowly does it...
I have used my slow cooker regularly for the last two years. It's so easy to chuck a load of veg and a little meat into the pot and forget it for a few hours. A good tip for cooking pulses, is to soak them overnight, boil them in a pan on the stove for the required 10 minutes or so to get rid of toxins (or whatever they are in kidney beans etc!) then put the bean mixture, along with chopped onions, tinned tomatoes, garlic, mixed herbs and some finely chopped veg in to the slow cooker pot and leave for a good couple of hours. It's absolutely delicious. Serve with rice.

I absolutely love my slow cooker and wonder how I managed without it. Not only does it save you money on your energy bill, it can save money on your food bill too. Cheaper cuts of meat, such as chuck steak, taste fantastic cooked this way. You can pile in heaps of veg and fill all the family on the tightest of budgets. Anyone thinking of getting one, go for it, but shop around, you can get some great deals on them. My large one (6 litres) cost only £16.99.
cooking
As well as using a slow cooker or any other form of cooking one l have not seen anyone talk about is a flask.
lf you put anything in a flask and fill with boiling water and leave for a few hours it will be cooked.
l use this method with eggs when l am travelling overnight so l can have hot eggs for breakfast
lf you want a hot tea meal when traveling just put in a packet of noodles or rice along with a bit of meat(cooked)and have a hot tea

Alternative: cook in bed or a hay box cooker
Even more energy efficient: things that soak up liquid like rice, lentils or beans and also stews and soups (even with potato cubes) can be cooked in your bed, using no energy at all. Just get them boiling for one minute or more on the stove to heat all ingredients thoroughly through. Then pack up in as many down comforters, pillows etc as possible to keep warm. After a while, the food will be done. It will take longer (up to around three times as long), but can stay unattended. So you can start dinner in the morning, put to bed, go to work and have a warm meal finished when you return.
Rice doesn't even take that long, for me it's usually done after half an hour in bed.
Plus: in winter, the food warms up your bed for the night.
