Avoid the glassy glug

Thursday, August 27, 2009, 10:59

Avoid bottled drinks in pubs or bars and go for the tapped version instead.

You could be contributing to the use of tons of production energy by opting for the bottle option on a night out.

You may be an eco-angel in your own home, making sure that you save energy and recycle everything that comes your way, but have you ever thought about what happens when go down the pub?

By having your drinks in glass bottles, you could be unwittingly contributing to the tonnes of CO2 emissions created every week from the production of the bottles.

Many bars, pubs and clubs will make an effort to recycle their leftover bottles, which is great and reduces the overall impact, but not all will do this. The only way to know for sure that you’re avoiding wasted energy is to go for the tapped version of your drink.

If you are drinking alcohol, go for beer or a spirit with a mixer. Try to keep hold of the same glass for the night and just ask the bar staff to refill it. This will cut down on the eventual amount of washing needed and reduce pollutants being released into waterways.

  • The largest glass furnaces produce more than 400 tonnes – that's more than one million bottles and jars - each day!
