Borrow Books

Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 10:41

Join a library to borrow books instead of buying new ones.

Why waste money on buying books that you’ll probably only read once and then throw away?

The world’s publishing industries are vast consumers of paper. The USA use the most paper at 332kg per person, while we Brits are slightly better at 194kg per person. But this is still far too much, especially when compared with people in Africa and Asia who only use 10kg per head.

Responsible reading is an important way of cutting down deforestation and ensuring the use of sustainable production methods in the paper industry. Next time you plan to buy a new book, try to ensure that it’s produced from recycled paper/sustainable sources.

Better still, don't buy it at all - take a book out at the library, borrow from a friend or buy one from a second-hand shop or charity instead.

If you do buy new books, make the most of them once you're finished with it. Again, you could loan it to a friend or donate it to a charity shop or local library.
