Join a Green Gym
Help the environment while getting fit…and no lycra in sight.
Green Gyms are the new way to get fit and are currently signing up members in droves all across the country. They offer you the opportunity to 'work out' in the open air through local environmental or gardening work.
Conservation experts believe that people must be involved in local projects in order for environmental improvements to be sustainable. Green Gyms work by engaging communities in identifying the problems facing their area and then equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve their vision of a better environment.
Gym sessions usually last for up to three hours, including warm up time, a refreshment break and stretches at the end to make sure you don’t pull any muscles. You’ll be trained on how to use the necessary tools and can also get tips on growing fruit and vegetables in your own garden.
Green Gyms offer several advantages to their members, including significant improvements in cardiovascular fitness, improved muscular strength, waist-to-hip ratio decrease and a significant improvement in the Mental Health Component Score.
Using a Green Gym instead of a traditional one not only helps the environment directly through the project work but also reduces your personal emissions from the energy required to heat and power a normal gym.
And, best of all, Green Gyms are totally free so you can keep fit without having to pay out expensive leisure club bills.
makes you think...
Physically active people are up to 50% less likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke, but over 70% of us are not active enough to benefit.
