Make the most of your council's household recycling scheme

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 15:04

Local authorities are increasingly providing recycling collections from your door.

Your recyclable materials are collected directly from your doorstep – making recycling even easier to do!

An increasing number of local authorities now run decent kerbside recycling schemes where separate bins or containers are provided for your recyclable materials and then collected alongside your main waste bin, or on alternate weeks.

Disappointingly, the level of service still varies hugely from area to area but those living in areas with a good service can find the facilities to recycle everything from cans, bottles and glass to paper, cardboard and garden cuttings literally right on their doorstep.

If your council runs such a scheme, be sure to read the information you should have been sent about it so you know what items can be recycled in what bin and when the bins/containers are then collected. Normally you can mix all your cans, plastic and glass items into one bin, saving you the trouble of having to separate them all out.

Likewise, garden waste, food waste and cardboard can increasingly also be put altogether in one container.

So make sure you find out exactly how your local scheme works and make the most of it.
