Recycle your glass bottles and jars

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 12:05

Recycle all your glass bottles and jars instead of throwing them out with your main rubbish.

Reusing and recycling bottles and jars reduces both energy consumption and the huge amount of waste sent to landfill sites.

The average household is estimated to use around 330 glass bottles and jars annually – a total of over 7 billion per year across the UK – but only around 30% of these are currently recycled.

Collecting and recycling all your bottles and jars used around the home can make a big impact on reducing this huge volume of waste.

Make sure all your bottles and jars are empty, have their tops removed and are washed, sorted and sent for recycling either via your council’s recycling collection services (where available) or by collecting up your bottles and jars and taking them to your nearest recycling bank.

Take care to only recycle suitable glass products though. There are different types of glass material and sorting out mixed glass collections can be a costly and ineffective procedure so many recycling collections/facilities will only accept certain types of glass items. It's important to separate clear from coloured glass if asked to do so by your collector/facility

makes you think...

Making glass bottles and jars from recycled ones saves energy. British Glass say that recycling just one glass bottle will:

  • Power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour
  • Power a computer for 20 minutes
  • Power a colour TV for 15 minutes
  • Power a washing machine for 10 minutes
