Recycle your metal cans and tins

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 13:01

Wash, squash and recycle your cans and tins instead of throwing them out with the rubbish.

Recycling your cans and tins reduces both production energy consumption and the huge amount of waste sent to landfill sites.

An estimated 5 billion aluminium drinks cans are used in the UK every year together with an estimated 12 billion steel food and drink cans and tins.

Currently 42% of aluminium drinks cans are recycled. That sounds like a reasonable figure – until you compare it to the likes of Switzerland and Finland who recycle over 90% of their cans. More disappointingly, only 25% of steel tins and cans are currently recycled - when absolutely ALL steel cans are actually recyclable.

Making an effort to separate and recycle all your cans and tins used around the home can make a big impact on reducing this huge volume of waste. It also saves vast amounts of energy by producing new products from recycled items rather than new materials.

Make sure all your cans and tins are emptied, washed, sorted and sent for recycling either via your council’s recycling collection services (where available) or by collecting up your tins and cans up and taking them to your nearest recycling bank.

makes you think...

Each household uses approximately 600 steel cans per year but, as a nation, we currently only recycle around a quarter of these.

We currently recycle around two-fifths of the aluminium drinks cans used in the UK - that's 2.1 billion cans recycled out of the 5 billion used every year.
