Buy local produce
Forget imported products and go for freshness and quality with local produce.
100 years ago nearly all the food we ate came from within 20 miles of our homes. Nowadays we can feast on the meat of the African Buffalo, or eat cheese made from the milk of the Tibetan Yak, but all this fine dining has a huge environmental cost.
The scary truth is that almost as much greenhouse gas is created by moving food than by all the power stations in the UK. Is it really worth this extra CO2 just so we can eat cheese that will bounce?
The first step in making this switch is to find out where you can buy local produce. Click here or use the search box below to find a list of local producers and farmers markets near to you.
Then it’s just a matter of making the effort to buy local. If your nearest producer is quite far away it may be useful to take orders from other people in your area and split the driving. Or why not buy lots of produce at one time and then freeze it?
makes you think...
Almost 900 times more energy is used to import produce than to eat your greens home grown and the contents of the average supermarket trolley will have clocked up thousands of air miles.
