Walk to local shops for small items rather than driving to the supermarket
Forget busy supermarkets and crowded car parks, your local shop will be able to provide most items you need.
Living in a busy household means it can be easy to run out of items and only notice at the last minute. Next time this happens, rather than driving over to the nearest supermarket, try walking to your local shop instead. It will often work out quicker and easier to just go local, rather than trying to park and navigate your way around the nearest supermarket.
Cars are generally more fuel-hungry over shorter journeys, meaning that your quick trip to the shops could result in a disproportionate amount of carbon being released into the environment. Even if you only use in the region of 2 litres of petrol, you will still be contributing 5 kg of carbon dioxide to the environment, which works out at 1.4 kg of carbon. If you were to ‘pop out’ to the shops once a week for one year, that would be a total of 260 kg of carbon dioxide and 72.8 kgs of carbon. Cutting this out by walking or cycling to the local shop would be an easy way to start reducing your carbon footprint.
If you really have to drive to get to the shops, make sure you limit shopping trips to one big shop a week, rather than lots of little trips.

An average of 84 trips are taken to stock the pantry over a year, that is 94 hours and 55 minutes in the supermarket.
