Reducing the number of car journeys you take is a great way of reducing your carbon emissions – and it’s cutting back on the regular shorter journeys that can make the biggest difference.

One of the most frequent journeys many of us make is the daily commute to and from work. Cars are generally more fuel-hungry over shorter journeys and even more so when you’re stuck in queuing rush-hour traffic so the regular trek to work and back can have a considerable effect on your emissions.

Look at how you can reduce your weekly car-based commutes, even if it’s for just one or two days out of the week. If the distance isn’t too great, you should consider walking or cycling to work, especially in the warmer, dryer weather. Not only is this better for both the environment and your wallet, you could see a marked improvement in your health too!

Alternatively, maybe you could leave the car at home for a day or two a week and opt for the bus or train instead. Use the time to read a book or catch up on your magazines rather than having to concentrate on the road for the journey.

Alternatively, ask around your workplace to find out if anyone lives near you who would be willing to car-share on a regular basis.
