Holiday in the UK

Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 15:18

Cut out your environment-damaging flights by taking your summer holiday in the UK.

Not only will you be reducing your carbon footprint but you will also be helping local UK people and businesses.

Package deals have caused an increase in the number of holidays being taken abroad because people think that it is cheaper but unless you want to stay in the hotel all holiday, you may find that the cost of drinks and food outside of the hotel are a lot more expensive due to the low exchange rate.

As the credit crunch hits the UK you may find that it is actually cheaper to holiday in the UK and a lot less hassle.

If you choose to go camping with the children then you can get a pitch for as little as £10 per night!

OK, so the British weather may not always be the most reliable in the world, but the scenery is hard to beat. Also if you have young children then a short journey in the car is far better than a long boring flight, plus travelling by car is far cheaper than an expensive flight and car hire.

If you wish to travel abroad, or have no alternative, then why not consider taking a ferry or the Eurostar and saving emissions.

Apart from producing 10 times less CO2 than an equivalent flight, Eurostar has now pledged to reduce its own emissions by 25% by 2012, and, since November 2007, they have been offsetting every traveller's CO2 free of charge, making Eurostar journeys carbon-neutral at no extra cost to travellers.

Flying is one of the biggest pollutants no matter how long or short a journey but if you really have no choice then carbon offset your emissions.

makes you think...

Cutting down by one long-haul flight a year could reduce your transport footprint by 24%
