Walk or cycle shorter distances

Thursday, April 30, 2009, 15:43

Leave the car at home and walk or cycle distances of less than two miles

Cutting out your shorter car journeys could reduce your overall car usage by a third.

Between 30% and 40% of car journeys made by the average UK household are less than 2 miles long. It’s easy to get into the habit of just jumping into the car, even for the shortest of trips, rather than walking or cycling.

But leaving the car at home more often, especially for shorter trips, could have a big impact on reducing your car-related emissions.

So next time you’re about to hop into the car for a school run or to nip to the shop for a newspaper or milk, leave your car keys in the house instead and take a walk.

Walking or cycling the shorter distances instead of automatically jumping in the car could cut not only a third off your overall car usage but also cut out the most polluting portion of your motoring, reducing your CO2 emissions by a sizeable chunk.
