Reduce your toilet flushing water wastage

Cut down on the amount of water going down the pan after every toilet trip.

Reduce your toilet water wastage without compromising hygiene.

A standard toilet cistern pushes 9-11 litres of water down the toilet pan with every flush. Over the period of a year, that adds up to around 50,000 litres for the average household. Yet the majority of toilet trips probably only require 50-60% of that amount of water for a clean flush.

The quickest and cheapest way to reduce the amount of water used by your toilet is to fill out some of the space in your toilet cistern with a suitable object.

House bricks wrapped in plastic (bubble-wrap or even just a carrier bag) to protect the brick from crumbling or moulding are an ideal solution to this. Alternatively, a large margarine tub, water bottle or similar container filled with water and sealed will work just as well.

Proper products, called Cistern Displacement Devices or Water Hippos, can also be purchased that have the same effect while more advanced products such as the Interflush fitting can offer even bigger water savings.

makes you think...

Older toilet cisterns can use as much as 11 litres of clean water every flush.
