According to UK Energy Watch, efficient offices pay £1/m2 annually for lighting

when a typical office pays about £3/m2.

And did you know you could heat water for 1,000 cups of tea with the amount of energy you waste lighting an office overnight? That’s a lot of drinks – not to mention energy –  down the drain.

We are here to help you slash those expensive costs in every way possible. Since it is estimated that at least one-third of the electric utilised by the average office is for lighting, we can help you reduce that amount significantly with our LED office lighting.

Why good office lighting is crucial

While office lighting needs to look great, it also has to comply with UK regulations. It needs to promote productivity, wellbeing and also be visually comforting.

Research from The National Centre for Biotechnology Information showed that great lighting can produce potent biological and therapeutic effects amongst workers.

It also revealed that poor lighting can cause eye strain, drowsiness, lack of focus and severe headaches among other ailments, so it really is important for the employer to utilise lighting correctly in an office.

Getting lighting right means you’ll easily get your return on investment but getting it wrong can affect the value of your property. What you want is efficient reliable office lighting that is easy to operate.

LED lights for greater savings

Clearly lighting is unavoidable in offices, so what can be done to reduce energy costs when faced with having to light an entire office?

LED lights are the most energy efficient lights on the market. With so little energy used to produce light, our team at Big Green Switch recommends converting to LED lighting as soon as possible so that you can start realising the cost-saving benefits today.

Compared to conventional lamps, LED lighting utilises only one-fifth of the usual electricity.

LED lights are said to be one of the best options when you want to save on your energy bill and help the environment as each one lasts for 50,000 – 70,000 hours. That’s equivalent to 5 – 8 years. Some lights can last for 10 years if they are left off when not being used.

Advantages of office LED lighting

With office LED lighting you won’t believe what your business can achieve: Installing this style of lighting will:

  • Cut operating expenses to increase your profit margin, helping you to save money if your office is on a budget.
  • Increase productivity – It is proven that poor lighting hinders office productivity so LEDs will help you get the most out of your staff!
  • Take advantage of low maintenance, long-life LED lights which (many last 20 years or more).
  • Reduce carbon emissions in compliance with government directives.

Great ways with office lighting

Any lamps that can mimic natural lighting are perfect for an office environment. To achieve the perfect harmony between natural and artificial light and avoid shadows and glare, lights should be parallel to the window and workspace.

With most office workers spending the majority of the day glued to their desks, it can be an unnaturally dark setting to spend hours on end in if not lit correctly. The amount of light we take in each day helps us sleep and feel well – and most importantly, affects productivity.

When there is a lack of natural-looking light to help us tell the time of day, then our circadian rhythm (body clock) loses its pace, with tiredness and listlessness as a result.

Our designers have over 20 years’ experience in planning and fitting office lighting. We will ensure you have the correct type of lighting that is strategically placed for the best illumination solutions possible.

What UK regulations exist regarding office lighting?

Our designers will make sure your lighting plans are in accordance with regulation 8 of the Workplace Regulations Act 1992. It states that employers must ensure that:

  • Every workplace has suitable and sufficient lighting
  • This should be natural light, so far as is reasonably practicable
  • Suitable and sufficient emergency lighting shall be provided where needed

The Health and Safety Executive (38) states that employers and people in control of non-domestic premises have a duty to ensure that lighting is safe and does not pose a health risk to employees and others who use their premises.
