Heat Pumps

There are so many ways in which energy from the sun can be captured and used to power any number of systems within a home or commercial enterprise that it is actually mind-boggling. Heat pumps are another of the amazing technologies that enable us to take advantage of free solar power.

Big Green Switch wants to help you understand the benefits of solar power and how heat pumps can not only save you money but also provide an income through the RHI, Renewable Heat Incentive.

After having helped thousands of customers throughout the UK convert to solar power and solar powered heat pumps, we feel confident in saying that we can help you significantly lower your utility bills whilst helping us work towards a green economy.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

There are two distinct types of heat pumps. Both utilise power from the sun but they work in different ways. Ground Source Heat Pumps, commonly referred to as GSHPs, circulate through a tunnel of pipes buried under the ground. Radiant heat from the ground is captured and sent to a compressor where the heat is condensed. This type of pump can heat hot water and/or can be used to heat a building. Any home or business thinking of using a GSHP heat pump would need to have a sizeable area outside where the pipes could be buried.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Whereas GSHPs gather radiant heat from the ground, Air Source Heat Pumps capture the warm rays from the sun in the air. This air, similarly in the way that GSHPs work, is sent to a compressor to compress the heat before being sent to the building as a heat source for climate control or heating water. To further complicate matters, there are two types of Air Source Heat Pumps, air-to-air and air-to-water. Whether you are looking at cost effective ways to heat water or to provide comfort on cold winter days, Big Green Switch can help you decide which type of system is right for you.
