Ireland’s Ireland solar generation record was rewritten on 11 August, when output on the national grid peaked at 1,258MW just before 1pm, covering roughly one third of all electricity in use across the country at that moment, according to figures from EirGrid.
That is a number worth pausing on. One third of a country’s real-time electricity demand met by solar, in Ireland, on a Tuesday in August. The figure is a long way from the drizzle-and-cloud dismissals that once greeted any suggestion that solar could be a serious part of the Irish generation mix.
The 11 August peak did not arrive from nowhere. EirGrid data show that just over a month earlier, on 9 July at 3pm, instantaneous solar output had reached 798MW, itself then a record level. The jump to 1,258MW underlines how quickly the installed base is building, though the figures also reflect favourable irradiance conditions on the day rather than a permanent shift in capacity alone.
July was meanwhile confirmed as a record month for solar generation, with the fuel source accounting for 9.4% of Ireland’s total electricity mix across the month. Ireland’s Minister for Climate, Energy, and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien, said the new daily peak came ‘on the back of EirGrid’s most recent monthly report, showing that July was a record month for solar energy in Ireland.’
The cumulative picture is arguably more telling than any single peak. By the end of July, 753 gigawatt hours (GWh) of solar energy had been supplied to the grid across the year to that point, according to EirGrid. That already exceeds the 659 GWh recorded for the whole of 2024. Ireland’s solar sector has, in other words, surpassed last year’s entire annual output before the summer was over.
O’Brien was direct about the policy argument. ‘Every megawatt of renewable electricity added to our system helps reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels,’ he said. ‘This will stabilise prices in the long term and ensure a secure and affordable supply of indigenously produced electricity for Irish households and businesses.’
He also flagged the complementary relationship between wind and solar, two technologies that generate under different weather conditions and at different times of day, a point the grid operator and policymakers have been making for some time as Ireland looks to balance an increasingly renewable system. ‘A diversified renewable electricity mix helps ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply,’ he said.
EirGrid data covering August indicate that 35% of electricity came from renewables during the month, a further marker of how the fuel mix is shifting. These are Scope 2-relevant numbers for any large Irish electricity consumer still assessing whether a power purchase agreement (PPA) anchored to renewable certificates is actually tracking real-time grid intensity, or simply providing accounting cover.
O’Brien also pointed to the timing of the record with some ceremony, noting it coincided with a solar eclipse: ‘It’s fitting that this happens in a week where we will witness a historic solar eclipse, one that I hope people up and down the country can enjoy safely, taking all precautions.’ The eclipse is atmospheric colour; the generation figures are the substance.
What Ireland’s trajectory does not yet answer is how the system will cope as solar penetration rises further, particularly around curtailment, storage and the grid infrastructure needed to absorb midday peaks without wasting them. The EirGrid data capture the upside. The stress-test questions will arrive later. For now, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications has a clean set of numbers to point to, and the Ireland solar generation record gives the renewable build-out a concrete benchmark to chase into 2026.
