Ematec‘s RBC-D yoke rental service is now live, with the German company making its adaptive rotor blade handling equipment available for hire alongside the existing purchase option in a move aimed squarely at service providers who want access to the technology without the balance-sheet commitment of ownership.

The decision to offer rentals, according to Ematec CTO Julian Eberhard, follows direct enquiries from service companies looking to deploy the yokes on individual projects without tying up capital. That is a reasonable commercial read of where the market sits: wind O&M and installation contractors are under pressure to keep asset-light wherever possible, and a specialised piece of lifting equipment with a narrow use case is exactly the kind of purchase that stretches procurement sign-off.

What the Ematec RBC-D yoke rental package actually covers

The RBC-D features an adaptive blade gripping system capable of handling rotor blades regardless of length, weight or manufacturer, with blade weights of up to 50 tonnes. That broad compatibility is the central commercial proposition: a single yoke works across blade generations used on 7MW turbines, including Enercon‘s E-175 EP5 E2 and the Vensys 175, as well as earlier and future generations. For a service company operating across multiple OEM contracts, that matters.

Ematec says the technology can save wind turbine manufacturers and installation service providers up to three days of construction time per turbine, which is where the rental arithmetic starts to look compelling. A three-day saving per turbine, multiplied across a project schedule, can offset hire costs quickly, without requiring the renter to carry the asset between contracts.

The rental package includes training for installation teams at Ematec’s plant and remote support for live projects, both of which reduce the friction of deploying the equipment with crews unfamiliar with it.

Enercon’s fleet illustrates the scale of uptake

Ematec’s strongest proof point is its relationship with Enercon. Enercon has ordered more than 35 RBC-D yokes over the past six years, with the majority already in use globally. Enercon generally deploys the RBC-D alongside the autonomous positioning system from Seasight Solutions, removing the need for guide ropes and ground-based winches during rotor blade installation.

The combined RBC-D-APS configuration permits blade installation at wind speeds of up to 10 m/s, against 8 m/s for conventional methods, and the system can handle up to three rotor blades per day depending on site conditions. Those operational windows translate directly into reduced weather-related downtime, which is one of the more stubborn cost drivers in onshore installation schedules.

‘This makes rental particularly attractive, because service companies can operate worldwide, completely independently of blade type and manufacturer,’ Eberhard said. ‘That is only possible with our yokes. It brings an entirely new level of flexibility to the market.’

It is a claim worth scrutinising, but the underlying logic holds: a yoke that is genuinely agnostic to blade geometry and OEM gives a contractor flexibility that a purchase order tied to a specific turbine programme does not.

Where the offshore variant fits in

The rental launch covers the onshore RBC-D, but the product family extends further. According to Wind Systems Magazine, Ematec has also developed an RBC-D40 offshore variant capable of safely picking up and handling rotor blades of up to 40 metric tons. Whether the rental model will eventually extend to that offshore configuration has not been stated, but the existence of a dedicated offshore product suggests the company is building out a wider service architecture rather than treating the onshore yoke as a standalone offering.

For now, the rental service is available with immediate effect. Service providers interested in assessing the equipment without a capital commitment have a straightforward route in, and Ematec’s training provision at its plant means the technical barrier to adoption is lower than it might otherwise be for crews stepping into the system for the first time.
