Ideally, the differences between a company office and a home office should be evident more in scale than in kind. Ever since the pandemic, millions of office goers have realised that fact with hard experience. Even though things have normalised to a great extent now, the necessity of having a reliable and competent home office has not declined at all. While that’s a wise trend, it also means that homes with a decent home office are leaving a larger carbon footprint than before. The good news is that it is possible in most homes to mitigate, if not eliminate the extra energy consumption. Any home office can be made comparatively more sustainable than before with a few easy steps.

Shift to an Energy Efficient Laptop

A computer is the functional centrepiece in nearly every home office setup. From accountants and engineers to digital artists and photographers, everyone needs access to a computer. Consequently, office computers tend to draw power constantly throughout office hours. As desktops are more power hungry than laptops, switch to an energy efficient laptop for your work at home. These Intel Core i3 laptops are surprisingly powerful, despite needing only a fraction of the energy that the average laptop needs to run similar tasks. The E-Cores allow for amazing battery life per charge and even when they are plugged in, Intel Core-i3 laptops draw energy sparingly.

Shift to Energy-Efficient LED Lights

LED lights have been around for years, but they have improved even further in the last few. Large commercial offices can shave off thousands from their annual electricity expenses by shifting to LED lights, which will soon become mandatory. The same applies to your own home as well and not just your home office. In case any section of your home still has CFL or incandescent lighting for some reason, it’s time to change your bulbs!

Take Your Office Off the Grid with Alternative Energy

Finite energy sources like coal, natural gas, and petroleum are not going to remain available for much longer. Several nations in the world, including the UK, are actively preparing for that day by gradually decreasing their dependence on non-renewable energy. You can go a step further and add to that effort by creating your own source of alternative energy to power everything in the office.

If it’s a relatively large office with a lot of electronic devices in it, then a combination of home windmills and a small, but efficient PV array comes well recommended. PV panels are more popular than windmills as natural energy generators, but we often forget that wind energy meets almost a quarter of the country’s total energy requirement. If the home office setup is not particularly power hungry or separated from the main residential building, the same system can be used to power your entire home. There is no better way to save money and energy simultaneously, than to have the elements themselves power your everything!
