The Deutsche WindGuard monitoring milestone of 1GW of renewable energy capacity under continuous surveillance has been reached by the company’s technical management division, marking the first time its Varel-based 24/7 control centre has crossed that threshold. The portfolio spans wind energy, solar photovoltaic, hybrid and energy storage systems across Germany and the Netherlands.

From monitoring to operational hub

The milestone reflects a shift in what technical management actually means in practice. Deutsche WindGuard says the function is evolving from a passive monitoring role into a central hub for the safe, secure and cost-effective operation of assets. That framing is credible in a market that is scaling quickly: according to Enerdata, Germany’s installed renewable power capacity increased by nearly 20 GW, or 12%, to nearly 190 GW in 2024. More capacity means more assets requiring oversight, and more operators who cannot afford to watch everything themselves.

Nicolas Kluth, Head of Technical Management, put the commercial case plainly. ‘Our aim is to ease operators’ day-to-day workload as much as possible. With short response times, clearly defined processes and sound technical decisions, we ensure high effective asset availability and optimum performance, thereby providing a crucial foundation for profitable energy production,’ he said. ‘Our 24/7 control centre forms the operational core of this approach. It enables us to detect faults in real time, initiate corrective action immediately and minimise downtime.’

That pitch lands differently when you look at where Germany’s renewable mix actually sits. Clean Energy Wire reports that solar capacity stood at 117 GW at the end of 2024, against 68.1 GW for onshore wind. The solar figure is large enough that hybrid and multi-technology portfolios are increasingly the norm rather than the exception, which is precisely the kind of complexity a centralised control function is built to handle.

Deutsche WindGuard monitoring milestone in a permitting context

The pipeline feeding those portfolios is not slowing. Deutsche WindGuard’s own statistics show that in 2024, 2,344 wind turbines with a total permitted capacity of 13.8 GW received approval in Germany. Not all of those will be constructed immediately, and permitting backlogs have historically created a gap between what is approved and what is actually generating. But the direction of travel is clear: the stock of assets requiring operational oversight is expanding, and the commercial logic for outsourced technical management firms to absorb that workload strengthens with each approval.

Offshore wind contributed too, though at a more modest rate. Enerdata notes that around 0.7 GW of offshore wind capacity went into operation in 2024, taking Germany’s offshore wind total to 9.2 GW. Deutsche WindGuard’s 1GW monitored figure covers assets in Germany and the Netherlands, so offshore exposure is plausible, though the company has not broken down the portfolio by technology share.

IT security: compliance as a differentiator

Beyond the operational case, there is a regulatory dimension worth examining. Deutsche WindGuard says it was among the first technical management providers for wind farms to demonstrate to the Federal Office for Information Security in 2022 that its 24/7 control centre meets the IT security requirements for operators of critical infrastructure under Section 8a of the BSI Act. The company says it has since been enhancing its IT security standards through ongoing process optimisation, regular audits and recurring evidence of compliance, and intends to align in future with Section 39 of the BSI Act.

Tobias Künne, Head of Government, Compliance & Risk, framed it as a trust argument. ‘This gives our customers lasting confidence in our technical management services, which are safe, secure, resilient and fit for the future,’ he said. That confidence matters when control centres are, by definition, single points of contact for the real-time operation of critical energy assets. A failure of IT security at that layer is not just an operational problem; for an asset classed as critical infrastructure, it is a regulatory one.

With Germany’s renewable fleet still expanding rapidly and the permitting pipeline running at scale, the 1GW monitoring figure is a snapshot rather than a ceiling. The harder question for the sector is whether technical management capacity is scaling fast enough to keep pace with asset deployment, and whether IT security standards across the industry are rising as quickly as the turbine count.
