easyJet‘s eHandshake fuel savings platform has entered deployment across roughly half the airline’s network, with the carrier projecting a reduction of up to 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually by eliminating unnecessary fuel uplift, according to Aviación al Día. It’s a specific, testable claim, which is exactly what makes it worth scrutinising.

What the eHandshake platform actually does

The core logic is straightforward. Airlines routinely carry more fuel than required for a given sector, partly as a buffer against uncertainty, partly because fuel-weight calculations have historically involved paper-based sign-off between ground crews and flight deck. Excess fuel becomes excess weight, which burns more fuel. The eHandshake platform, built on the i6 application, is designed to digitise and streamline that refuelling handshake, enabling more precise uplift decisions in real time.

According to GreenAir News, eHandshake will also eliminate approximately 600,000 sheets of paper annually as the airline moves away from paper-based processes. That is a meaningful operational carbon and resource saving in its own right, even if it sits firmly in the category of Scope 1 housekeeping rather than systemic decarbonisation.

The platform will be integrated into easyJet’s ETechlog system, which flight crews already use, according to Aviación al Día. That integration matters for adoption: new tools that require parallel workflows tend to be worked around rather than embedded. Plugging eHandshake directly into an existing crew interface removes a layer of friction.

The rollout plan and what the numbers need to prove

Current deployment covers around half of easyJet’s network. GreenAir News reports that the airline plans to expand eHandshake to approximately 90% of destinations over the next three years. That trajectory gives a rough timeline for when the 10,000-tonne projection becomes testable against actual operational data rather than modelling.

And it is worth being clear about what 10,000 metric tons of CO₂ represents in the context of a short-haul carrier operating hundreds of aircraft across Europe. easyJet does not publish its total annual Scope 1 emissions in this announcement, so a precise percentage reduction cannot be calculated here. What can be said is that fuel efficiency measures of this type address operational carbon directly, without relying on carbon offsets of dubious additionality or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) volumes that the industry has consistently struggled to scale at price. On that basis, the mechanism is sound even if the headline number invites verification once the platform reaches full deployment.

The paper-reduction figure deserves a moment too. Six hundred thousand sheets is not a token gesture. In procurement and facilities terms, eliminating that volume from ground operations has a measurable embodied carbon component, and it signals a wider process digitisation that typically yields efficiency gains beyond the initial use case. Whether easyJet counts paper-process carbon anywhere in its Scope 1 or Scope 2 reporting is a separate question, but the direction of travel is coherent.

Reading the broader picture

For sustainability professionals evaluating airline ESG disclosures, the eHandshake announcement is a relatively rare thing: an operational initiative with a defined mechanism, a quantified projection and a stated rollout plan. That does not make it a solved problem. The 10,000-tonne figure is a projection based on avoided unnecessary fuel carriage, and projections under real operating conditions can diverge from modelled outcomes when network complexity, weather patterns and crew behaviour are factored in.

What the platform does not address, and cannot address alone, is the structural decarbonisation challenge facing short-haul aviation: the absence of commercially viable zero-emission propulsion at scale, slow SAF supply growth, and the Scope 3 emissions embedded in passenger demand. eHandshake sits in the operational efficiency column, not the net-zero pathway column. Both columns matter, but they should not be conflated in reporting or in corporate communications.

GreenAir News reports that the three-year expansion to around 90% of the network will be the real test of whether the projected savings translate into verified reductions. That is when the claim moves from press release to performance data.
