EDF Power Solutions apprentices are joining the business’s UK operations this year, with seven new starters embarking on a three-year programme spanning wind turbine maintenance, SCADA systems and business administration.
Five of the seven will train as wind turbine technicians on a 36-month programme that combines structured learning with hands-on site experience. The remaining two will specialise in SCADA technology and business administration respectively, with the cohort based across locations including Durham, Goole and Livingston.
The wind turbine technician apprentices begin with a five-day safety training course before rotating through a series of work placements at operational sites. After that, they spend 12 to 18 months working full-time alongside existing EDF Power Solutions UK teams. It is a structure designed to build competence progressively rather than drop trainees into live environments from week one.
The business administration apprentice will work towards a level 5 qualification, with a pathway to continue to level 6. The SCADA technician apprentice can achieve a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Engineering alongside a Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, a dual qualification that gives the role more technical credibility than a single certification would.
According to Bright Network, the wind turbine technician apprenticeship carries a starting salary of £16,912. That figure sits broadly in line with similar technical apprenticeship rates in the energy sector, though it is worth noting it is a starting point across a 36-month programme, not a qualified technician’s rate. Trainees spending up to 18 months of that period working full-time at operational sites will be building skills that command considerably more once qualified.
The renewable energy sector’s skills gap is well documented, and wind technician shortages are a recurring operational pressure for asset owners. Seven apprentices will not close that gap for the industry as a whole, but for a business operating wind assets at multiple UK sites, building an internal pipeline of trained technicians with direct experience of its own systems has practical value beyond the press release.
EDF Power Solutions UK Asset Operations Director Piero Maggio said the company is ‘delighted to welcome a new intake of apprentices to EDF Power Solutions UK and to continue investing in the next generation of talent for the renewable energy sector.’ He added that apprentices ‘gain hands-on experience with some of the latest technologies used across our operations, combining structured learning with practical, real-world experience.’
The framing is standard for this kind of announcement, but the programme structure is not without substance. A 36-month commitment that moves from safety induction to extended full-time site work, and leads to nationally recognised qualifications from Pearson, reflects a more considered approach than a short placement dressed up as an apprenticeship.
EDF Power Solutions UK Chief People Officer Stephanie Bouchard-Saliba said apprentices are ‘an important part of our business from day one, bringing fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and new ideas,’ and that the company is ‘proud to support their development within our open and inclusive culture.’
Culture claims are difficult to verify from outside, and no apprenticeship announcement is going to lead with its retention figures. What can be assessed is programme design, qualification outcomes and the breadth of roles on offer. On those measures, this intake covers more ground than a purely technical cohort would, and the level 5 to level 6 pathway for the business administration apprentice suggests at least some ambition about where participants end up, not just where they start.
