Inch Cape turbine installation is scheduled to begin in November, with the first of 576 turbine components now arriving at the Port of Dundee as ESB and Red Rock Renewables push their 1,100MW offshore wind farm off the east coast of Scotland towards construction.

The first tower sections for the Vestas V236-15MW machines began arriving in early August. Shipments have since followed almost weekly until late September, carried aboard six vessels including Boldwind, Tony Stark and Vestvind. Tower sections are being offloaded first, followed by nacelles, and lastly the blades.

What 576 components actually looks like on the quayside

Break down those 576 components and the logistics become clearer: 288 tower sections, 216 blades stacked in sets of three, and 72 nacelles. According to Windtech International, each turbine will comprise a four-section tower, three blades each measuring 115.5 metres in length, and a nacelle housing the electrical equipment. Multiply that out and the numbers match: 72 turbines producing 15MW apiece gives the project its headline 1,100MW capacity figure.

Handling that volume of kit requires serious port footprint. Inch Cape Offshore Limited has reserved the entire Renewables Hub at the port (equivalent to 28 football pitches) from March 2025 to March 2026, with around 50 staff expected on site across that period, according to Inch Cape Offshore. A twelve-month exclusive reservation of that scale signals that the project team is not planning to rush the offshore phase; there is assembly and sequencing work to do before anything goes on a jack-up.

Inch Cape turbine installation: batches of four, starting November

Cadeler’s jack-up vessel Wind Mover will carry out the offshore turbine installation, transporting components to the site in batches of four from November, Windtech International reports. Working in batches of four is a common rhythm for large-rotor installation campaigns, where weather windows and vessel deck space set the pace. The Vestas V236 is one of the largest turbines currently in series production, and its 115.5-metre blades are not easily handled in adverse North Sea conditions.

The scale of what is going into the water deserves attention in its own right. Inch Cape Offshore states that these will be the tallest turbines ever deployed in Scottish waters, with consent for tip heights of up to 291 metres. To put that in context: the Shard in London stands at 310 metres. Seventy-two structures approaching that height, anchored to the seabed off the Angus coast, represent a material addition to Scotland’s offshore wind capacity and a non-trivial navigational and visual presence.

From a project-delivery standpoint, the arrival of components on schedule is genuinely positive news. Offshore wind construction has a long history of supply-chain delays, port congestion and vessel availability problems compressing or collapsing installation windows. The fact that deliveries have been landing almost weekly across six vessels, covering all three component types, suggests the logistics chain is, at this stage, holding.

Whether that rhythm continues through the offshore installation phase is the question worth watching. November start dates in the North Sea carry inherent weather risk, and batches of four turbines per voyage means Wind Mover will need to complete multiple round-trips before the project reaches meaningful installed capacity. The consented tip height of 291 metres also means the V236 towers on this site will be among the most demanding structures the installation vessel has handled in terms of crane reach and load.

Inch Cape Offshore’s port reservation runs to March 2026, which sets a practical outer boundary for the quayside assembly phase. That timeline, combined with a November installation start, gives a rough operational window of roughly four to five months for offshore work before the port contract concludes, weather and logistics permitting.
