The Supernode Stage 3 grid-forming battery project in Queensland has secured more than a technology contract: behind GE Vernova’s appointment by Quinbrook sits a A$469 million senior secured, non-recourse financing package, with Deutsche Bank among the backers, and an offtake agreement with Stanwell Corporation already in place.

GE Vernova confirmed it will provide power conversion, plant controls, system integration and grid-connection support for Stage 3, extending its role across all three stages of what is shaping up as one of Australia’s largest single-site battery energy storage developments. Stages 1 and 2 use GE Vernova technology and are now in full operation.

What Supernode Stage 3 grid-forming technology actually means for the grid

Grid-forming is the detail worth pausing on. Conventional battery systems are grid-following: they respond to the existing grid signal. Grid-forming inverters actively generate a voltage waveform, allowing the battery to support system stability, including frequency response and system strength, without a synchronous generator doing the heavy lifting. For a grid steadily retiring coal capacity, that distinction matters.

Stage 3 has already achieved Generator Performance Standards (GPS) acceptance, the milestone that establishes the agreed technical performance standards applicable to the project’s connection to Australia’s National Electricity Market, according to GE Vernova. Ed Torres, Business Leader Power Conversion & Storage, GE Vernova’s Electrification segment, said the engineering and integration work helped Stage 3 secure that acceptance. GPS acceptance is not automatic: it requires the project to demonstrate it can meet specific technical obligations at the point of connection, and clearing it at this stage removes a meaningful regulatory risk from the project’s path to operation.

The financing structure and offtake that de-risk the commitment

The commercial scaffolding around the technology appointment is worth examining. Deutsche Bank has confirmed its participation in the A$469 million senior secured, non-recourse financing package supporting Stage 3. Non-recourse structuring means lenders’ claims are limited to the project’s assets and revenues, rather than Quinbrook’s broader balance sheet: the kind of project-finance architecture that long-funded offshore wind and is now migrating into large-scale storage.

On the revenue side, Supernode confirms that Stanwell Corporation has signed an offtake agreement to contract Stage 3’s output. An offtake with a named counterparty is a material comfort for any lender evaluating a merchant battery project: it converts at least part of the revenue stack from price-exposed to contracted, which is precisely what non-recourse debt providers need to model a serviceable cash flow.

Stage 3 will add 260 MW and 1,216 MWh of four-hour storage to the Supernode site. Combined with the operational Stages 1 and 2, the full development reaches 780 MW and 3,075 MWh at a single location, a scale that starts to carry genuine system-level consequence rather than just portfolio optics.

James Allan, Senior Director at Quinbrook, described Supernode as having been designed as more than a battery storage project from the outset. The site, he said, carries capacity for a further 520 MW of expansion, which could include battery storage, data centres or a combination of both. Data centre co-location alongside grid-scale storage is a configuration attracting real interest across several markets, though Allan’s framing is appropriately conditional: ‘could include’ is not a commitment, and the commercial model for such hybrid sites is still being stress-tested in practice.

What is not conditional is the immediate project scope. GPS acceptance is secured, the financing is structured, the offtake is contracted, and GE Vernova is confirmed across all three stages. For a technology that regulators and system operators have been urging developers to take seriously, Supernode Stage 3 grid-forming capability arriving with that level of commercial and regulatory preparation is a more complete picture than most announcements in this space manage to offer.
