Two new onshore wind orders in Germany have put the Vestas V162 Juwi Germany pipeline at 86MW across the Mehring 2 and Breuberg sites, with delivery programmes stretching into 2028, and a third project now adding materially to that total.

Vestas will supply seven V162-6.2MW turbines to each of the two sites, giving a combined nameplate capacity of 86MW. Both orders form part of Vestas’ third-quarter order intake and each carries a 20-year service agreement. The commercial terms beyond that have not been disclosed.

Delivery schedules for Mehring 2 and Breuberg

At Mehring 2, turbine deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027, with commissioning to follow in the second quarter of 2028. The Breuberg timeline is slightly later: according to Windtech International, deliveries there are planned to begin in the first quarter of 2028, with commissioning set to start in the third quarter of that year. Both sites are therefore expected to reach operational status in 2028, assuming no slippage in German permitting or grid connection.

The V162-6.2MW is among the larger turbines in Vestas’ onshore portfolio, with a 162-metre rotor diameter. Seven units at that rating give each site 43.4MW, close to the upper end of what many German wind projects achieve under current zoning and distance rules. Whether either site can expand further is not addressed in the announcements.

Vestas V162 Juwi Germany: a third order adds 62MW

The two orders reported here are not the full picture. Vestas has also announced a separate 62MW order from Juwi for the Olsberg-Plackweg project in Germany, comprising 10 V162-6.2MW turbines. That order takes the combined Vestas V162 Juwi Germany tally to 148MW across three projects, all using the same turbine type.

That consistency matters. Standardising on a single turbine model across a portfolio simplifies supply-chain procurement, service scheduling and spare-parts management. Vestas, in turn, benefits from a committed volume customer running the same platform at scale. For an OEM trying to demonstrate order-book depth in a quarter, three projects from one developer using one turbine model is a cleaner story than three disparate wins.

What none of the announcements address is the carbon accounting side. Operational carbon from new German onshore wind is about as clean as grid-connected generation gets. The embodied carbon in manufacturing 24 large turbines (steel, concrete, fibreglass) is a separate question, and one neither Vestas nor Juwi has addressed publicly in these announcements. For buyers with Scope 3 reporting obligations, that gap will eventually need filling.

Germany remains a critical market for onshore wind following years of permitting gridlock, and the pace of new-project announcements has picked up. Whether the construction and grid-connection infrastructure can absorb the pipeline being assembled is the practical test ahead. Three projects committing to 2027 and 2028 delivery windows will find out whether that optimism is warranted.

Commissioning of the Breuberg project (the later of the two sites announced today) is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2028, which is the nearest dated milestone across the full three-project Juwi pipeline.
