In so many applications and settings, power is a necessary component. Without it, there would be no way to power essential machines or keep necessary devices online.

A mains plug is slightly different than your standard two- and three-prong plug. Knowing a bit more about these mains plugs can give you a better idea of what they are about and where they should be used.

What is a Mains Plug?

Simply put, a mains plug is one of the plug types that is used to connect electrical equipment to a power source. Any major business you look at has some sort of electrical power requirement to ensure that processes and applications can be completed.

You will find this type of plug in most situations and settings among businesses. Mains plugs are found in commercial buildings, offices, homes, and even in industrial settings around the globe. The key is to find the right fit for your current application to ensure a proper fit.

What is the Purpose of a Mains Plug?

The concept of plugs and sockets is something that we see in everyday life. No matter where you live, using equipment that requires an electrical charge requires the proper plug to go into the accompanying outlet. If the fit isn’t right, it not only won’t go into the outlet but could do damage to the plug and outlet as well.

One of the most common actions for installing electrical equipment is plugging into the socket. You can change out the plug in some instances where damage has been done, most typically due to lack of maintenance. If mains plugs are not properly cared for or replaced, it can lead to major issues like potential power failures, electrical fires, and very expensive work to repair the issues.

The Different Types of Plugs

The most common mistake made is assuming that any plug type will work with any outlet. But depending on where you go in the world, you will find a different orientation for not only the plugs but the outlets as well. Don’t just assume that one size fits all because you will wind up being disappointed more often than not.

There are several different plug types, ranging from A-K (and NEMA, which is for North America, but more on that later). For the United Kingdom and the United States, the three-prong plug is one of the more common types. It has two flat pins and a rounded pin that sits below and in the middle of those two.

When you start to travel, that’s when you see major changes. Most parts of Europe, for instance, make use of the dual pin plug. Some of these have an earthing pin that is mounted to the socket to reduce the chances of electrical shock or shortage.

Different Places, Different Applications

The reason that you see different plug configurations is two-fold. For one, there are different uses. You generally won’t find the same pins used in residential applications as you would for industrial or commercial uses, for instance.

The second is a matter of voltage. Different outlets and electrical equipment have different voltage ratings. Mismatch them and you either won’t have enough power or will wind up having too much power, which can do damage to the plug. In the event of a repair or replacement, knowing the different types can really prove beneficial. There is a lot more to know about mains plugs than that, but it is a good place to start. Before long, you will notice how versatile these plugs are.
